Universal has one upped the trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World [SPILG], an action comedy for the Nintendo generation. Directed by Edgar Wright [EWRIG], the film stars Michael Cera [MCERA] as the title character who in order to win over the girl of his dreams, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead [MEWIN], must battle her seven evil ex-boyfriends. Judging from the trailer, Scott Pilgrim looks to be the best feature adaptation of a video game, except it was based on a graphic novel series...
Two new wide releases stalled upon take-off allowing last weekend's champ Shrek Forever After [SHRK4] to remain atop the weekend box office. Families fueled the 3D animated film to an estimated $55.6 million over the 4-day holiday weekend. Shrek has totaled $145.4 million in 10 days. In a summer of mostly disppointments so far, the weekend box office is shaping up to be one of the weakest in nearly a decade.
In aclose finish for second place, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time [PRSIA]...
The month of May has so far been lacking in quality blockbuster films and, judging by the reviews, the two new wide releases look to continue that disappointing fashion. However, poor reviews are not going to affect the debut of Sex and the City 2 [SATC2] one iota. Two years ago, Sex and the City splashed down with a skyscraping $56.9 million as fans of the series made a ladies’ night out of attending during opening weekend. The same legion of women will turn the sequel into another...
Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the romantic comedy Life As We Know It [LAWKI]. Katherine Heigl [KHEIG] and Josh Duhamel [JDUHA] play two single professionals who had a disastrous first date, but are contrived back together to live in the same house and raise their dead friends' baby as her new parents.
An era comes to a close this week as American Idol judge Simon Cowell bids farewell to the juggernaut he helped create. Last night Cowell gave his final critiques to season nine finalists Lee Dwayze [AI9LDE] and Crystal Bowersox [AI9CBO]. Known for his mean remarks and scathing commentaries, Cowell departed from his usual barbs by genuinely showing his love for the two contestants. This evening, either Bowersox or Dwayze will be crowned the next American Idol. Let’s see what their final...
Paramount has unveiled the first trailer for the comedy Morning Glory [MORNG] on Apple. Here's the official synopsis to save me the trouble of having to describe this mishmash of a story:
Stumbling into a job at "Daybreak" (the last–place national morning news show), Becky Fuller (Rachel McAdams [RMCAD]) decides to revitalize the show by bringing on legendary TV anchor Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford [HFORD]). Unfortunately, Pomeroy refuses to cover morning show staples like celebrity...
Lionsgate has also unleashed the first trailer for the horror film The Last Exorcism [LXORC]. Shot in the hand-held style of last year's breakout phenomenon Paranormal Activity, a documentary film crew follows a Evangelical minister as he performs an exorcism on a young woman.
Lionsgate has released the first trailer for their 3D CG animated film Alpha and Omega [ALPOM]. Justin Long [JLONG] and Hayden Panettiere [HPANE] voice the two lead wolves from opposite sides of the social hierarchy who are trapped together to repopulate a different party of the country. The reluctant couple must work together and find their way home to their pack, while falling in love along the way.
In all likelihood living up to its billing as 'The Final Chapter', Shrek Forever After [SHRK4] debuted with an estimated $71.25 million. Even with 3D accounting for 61% of the revenue, Shrek Forever After grossed 42% less than the $121.6 million debut of Shrek the Third in 2007.
After two weeks at the top spot, Iron Man 2 [IRNM2] dropped to second with $26.6 million. The superhero sequel has zapped $251.3 million.
Robin Hood [RBNHD] finished third with $18.7 million, dropping 48% in its...
