The nominations for the 87th Academy Awards were announced earlier today. The Hollywood Stock Exchange offered NominOptions for the leading contenders in the top eight categories and HSX traders collectively successfully predicted 90% of the Oscar nominees this year. Here's how each category broke down.
The Best Picture race has 8 nominees this year: American Sniper [N5PAMS], Birdman [N5PBRD], Boyhood [N5PBOY], Selma [N5PSEL], The Grand Budapest Hotel [N5PGBH], The Imitation Game [N5PTIG], The Theory of Everything [N5PTOE], Whiplash [N5PWHP]. HSX correctly named 7, but left out Whiplash for Wild.
The Best Director nominees were Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu – Birdman [N5DAGI], Bennett Miller – Foxcatcher [N5DBMI], Morten Tyldum – The Imitation Game [N5DMTY], Richard Linklater – Boyhood [N5RLI] and Wes Anderson – The Grand Budapest Hotel. HSX picked 3 out of 4, choosing Clint Eastwood – American Sniper over Bennett Miller. A NominOption was regrettably not offered for Wes Anderson.
The Best Actor nominees were Benedict Cumberbatch – The Imitation Game [N5ABCU], Bradley Cooper – American Sniper [N5ABCO], Eddie Redmayne – The Theory of Everything [N5AERE], Michael Keaton – Birdman [N5AMKE] and Steve Carell – Foxcatcher [N5ASCA]. HSX scored a perfect 5 out of 5.
The Best Actress nominees were Felicity Jones – The Theory of Everything [N5CFJO], Julianne Moore – Still Alice [N5CJMO], Marion Cotillard – One Day, Two Nights [N5CMCO], Reese Witherspoon – Wild [N5CRWI], and Rosamund Pike – Gone Girl [N5CRPI]. HSX was 4 for 5, missing Marion Cotillard for Amy Adams – Big Eyes.
The Best Supporting Actor nominees were Edward Norton – Birdman [N5RENO], Ethan Hawke – Boyhood [N5REHA], J.K. Simmons – Whiplash [N5RJKS], Mark Ruffalo – Foxcatcher [N5RMRU], Robert Duvall – The Judge [N5RRDU]. HSX predicted all 5 nominees.
The Best Supporting Actress nominees were Emma Stone – Birdman [N5SEST], Keira Knightley – The Imitation Game [N5SKKN], Laura Dern – Wild [N5SLDE], Meryl Streep – Into the Woods [N5SMST] and Patricia Arquette – Boyhood [N5SPAR]. HSX was 4 out of 5, opting for Jessica Chastain – A Most Violent Year over Laura Dern.
The Best Adapted Screenplay nominees were American Sniper [N5EAMS], Inherent Vice [N5EINH], The Imitation Game [N5ETIG], The Theory of Everything [N5ETOE] and Whiplash [N5EWHP]. HSX was once again 4 for 5, leaving out Inherent Vice for Gone Girl.
The Best Original Screenplay nominees were Birdman [N5OBRD], Boyhood [N5OBOY], Foxcatcher [N5OFOX], Nightcrawler [N5ONTC] and The Grand Budapest Hotel [N5OGBH]. HSX went another 4 for 5, missing Nightcrawler with Selma.
