Not many hard and fast rules, but some recommendations
Don't have favourite stocks - it may have been your favourite TV program growing up, but if the stock is nose-diving - sell it
Don't have vanity stocks - it may look good to have a stock where you have doubled/tripled your money, but if it isn't moving much at the moment, you've got your limited money tied up
Higher risk = higher reward - whilst it is tempting to minimise your risk by buying a small amount of lots of stocks, in order to make money you need all of those to pay off, if you go all in on a few stocks you are confident with, you've got more chance of them all paying off (but also more chance of them all going wrong!)
In terms of selling when it dips a percentage, you need to try and understand why it has dipped - has it had bad news, is it a high value blockbuster stock that people are selling of to invest in the next IPO - it may bounce back quickly, so you need to do it on a case by case basis
I would recommend concentrating on new and upcoming releases (especially the derivatives for the blockbusters) as they tend to be more newsworthy and volatile.
As an aside, if a stock doesn't have much trading activity it will slowly lose value, so watch out for stocks that don't have massive daily losses but slowly eek into the red (as you get spare money, you can use it by shorting these stocks)
