Question about Shorting

I read the FAQ and the HSX Glossary, but I still have no idea what shorting is or how it works. For that matter, what is the difference between Short stocks and Long stocks? The Glossary gives "Short Selling" a bland definition, some equation, and how it effects others, but I still have no idea what it is, its negatives and benefits. Can someone please explain it to me?
