Not exactly a fitting end to the character (Spoilers)
If Leia is killed off in a rather random attack, it's not going to seem like a satisfying way for Leia to go out.
Laura Dern's character is rumored to be a political rival to Leia who takes over in her absense. What's revealed in some of the novels pre-Force Awakens is that Leia's become a political pariah after she's outted as Vader's daughter - something that's only happened a few years before Force Awakens. Her rivals believe Leia cannot be trusted.
Poe & company not only have the First Order against them, but the Resistance is in the hands of someone who feels Leia is better off dead.
With Carrie's death, how are lines bashing Leia going to be received? And will killing her off in light of Carrie's death seem far too dark and depressing?
