Fans who actually support(ed) these films, and buy/bought the merch are still derided as diaper babies, implied racists for rejecting diversity, and sexists for calling for Kennedy's job.
i don't recall anyone ever having any problems with Lando, Leia, Mace Windu, Padme in the old films? Ahsoka Tano, Jaina Solo, and whatever the name of Luke's redhead sith wife chick, all women, are like the most popular characters to emerge out of the non-film expanded universe content. Their toys pricey and are sought after, and they're consitently cosplayed, even after disney retconned at least two of them out of canon. (not really a star wars fan, this is based of **** i've read/seen at cons.)
I don't think their fanbase was the problem.
