I found this film to be endlessly inventive. An awe inspiring combination of elements are at work on this film. It felt like i was watching some long lost Kubrick film. There was a point to every little thing; from the wide angle and fish eye lenses providing an overwhelming sense of paranoia and nightmare, to the score, which i found to be completely underrated (I haven't heard much chatter about the music in this film, and that's flat out wrong because it completely works here). The script is just a lights out, tight melding of wit, tension, and despair.
There are several audacious set pieces in this; I laughed out loud through much of this, from the fantastic dance sequence (glorious), to the many farcical sequences of absurdity, to the outrageous costuming.
But what really got me was the script, which is totally fascinating and is so well put together it just kills. It reminded me of a Quentin script; there is so much tender loving care put into the character development and the revelations throughout that add to the conflicts and scenarios.
It's a real stunner. Ten minutes in I felt i was watching a great film, and I didn't want it to end. And of course the ending will be controversial, and I have zero doubt that most American audiences will leave feeling gyped or bewildered at the very least. Good. The ending is awesome, inevitable, and there's no need to search for strange explanations; everything you need to know to understand that final pose is right there in the story that preceded it. Beautifully executed. Creepy and haunting to the very end, just the way i like them.
Part of me felt a kinship between this and Hereditary; but I found this film to be oh so much more than that. I cannot wait to see this one again in a theater, and then hopefully dissect the hell out of it via many viewings, preferably via a Criterion Blu Ray (please).
Kudos to Mr. Lanthimos for making such a striking piece of work. This film is a glorious example of why I love the movies.
