All Universal and Focus films can go PVOD after 17 days, but they would be foolish to do it with F9. {nm}

W: AMC, Universal Reach Deal on Theatrical Exclusivity for Premium On-Demand Titles tomcat90 Jul 28, 13:36

17 day, 3 weekend theatrical window (gulp) {nm} notfabio Jul 28, 13:39

I bet a bunch of UNI titles are getting set up as PVOD right now like CANDYMAN {nm} Moviesnob Jul 28, 13:43

I am curious what the terms are regarding advertising TVOD during 17 day theatrical window Moviesnob Jul 28, 13:45

They are updating the article, there is apparently a revenue sharing agreement on the PVOD window. {nm} notfabio Jul 28, 13:51

Here's the press release Antibody Jul 28, 13:51

yep and they have their own TVOD platform, but still every ad that says "on itunes on xx-xx-xxxx" will just push people out of the theater {nm} Moviesnob Jul 28, 13:54

Yep, if I had to throw a couple of titles, 355, Purge (and other non branded Blumhouse), Nobody. {nm} notfabio Jul 28, 13:46

Basically most if not all the Focus titles. {nm} Antibody Jul 28, 13:50

Their article only commits to "2021" theatrical releases, so as Snob pointed out, I definitely think Candyman is first up. {nm} notfabio Jul 28, 13:52

Focus still platforms and you cant do that with a 17 day window {nm} Moviesnob Jul 28, 13:55

That's pre-pandemic. High Note, Irresistible went PVOD. {nm} Antibody Jul 28, 13:57

IRRESISTIBLE had to come out before the election and HIGH NOTE was not expected to be a break out for them like PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN Moviesnob Jul 28, 13:59

It's in the press release "exclusivity for all Universal Pictures and Focus Features theatrical releases, " {nm} Antibody Jul 28, 14:00

but it wont be "most if not all" Focus titles. They literally just had their best theatrical year ever in 2019 Moviesnob Jul 28, 14:05

Maybe COME PLAY ends up on PVOD {nm} Moviesnob Jul 28, 14:08

I think we'll see their Oscar contenders go PVOD before Feb 2021. {nm} Antibody Jul 28, 14:11

Big win for Universal, nine years after Tower Heist. {nm} Antibody Jul 28, 13:42

This is a BIG mistake and it's further going to kill theatrical exhibition. TheWeekendWarrior Jul 28, 13:53

What are PVOD movies charged compared to movie tickets? {nm} Jay_Beezy Jul 28, 14:59

$20+ {nm} Moviesnob Jul 28, 15:03

So obviously a trade-off, particularly since would-be PVOD movies wouldn’t be getting premium theaters (IMAX, Dolby, Prime). {nm} Jay_Beezy Jul 28, 15:08

And that's for a 48 hour rental... what Amazon charges $3.99 {nm} TheWeekendWarrior Jul 28, 15:24

So it'd be cheaper to see the would-be PVOD movies in theaters. {nm} Jay_Beezy Jul 28, 15:39

Unless you have a family of 3+. {nm} Antibody Jul 28, 16:04

I’m still single. Lol {nm} Jay_Beezy Jul 28, 16:06

And even then only if you don't buy concessions at the theatre. {nm} DTravel Jul 28, 16:23

am I reading the article correctly that blockbusters like F9 aren't included? {nm} tealfan Jul 28, 15:39

I read it that way as well. {nm} Jay_Beezy Jul 28, 15:40

There's this quote in the article: Jay_Beezy Jul 28, 15:43

All Universal and Focus films can go PVOD after 17 days, but they would be foolish to do it with F9. Antibody Jul 28, 15:57

So is this going to mean that I won't be able to see Universal releases in a theatre in my county since they are all Cinemark. {nm} DTravel Jul 28, 16:21

The US and some international countries are covered in this deal, but not all, if they are not in your country I'm sure this doesn't apply. {nm} notfabio Jul 28, 17:42

But even if it did, this would only apply to VOD titles. So major titles like JURASSIC WORLD 3 would not apply. {nm} notfabio Jul 28, 17:42

COUNTY, not COUNTRY. No 'R'. I live in California and all of the theatres within an hour's drive are owned by Cinemark. DTravel Jul 28, 19:41

if they dont take a similar or the same deal, Cinemark wont play the Uni PVOD titles {nm} Moviesnob Jul 28, 21:11

If I'm understanding correctly ALL Universal titles are potentially PVOD titles after 3 weekends so without such a deal DTravel Jul 28, 22:12
