I mean, 9 hours is literally three movies so he could just finish up VFX, chop it up

And then he only has one more movie to make to finish the whole thing up... .and yes, it's going to take many years to finish the VFX. The cost of VFX on a 9 hour movie is so insanely expensive, there's no way he's going to just throw away 6 hours of movie with finished VFX.
