Movies

Its a good question and too much to discuss on these boards. My answer is kinda yes and no.

In short, movie distribution and movie production both have their issues which are different but also linked (thats the "yes" part of the answer). But the biggest problems in distribution aren't really an issue with SINNERS as horror movies tend to underperform their box office on home ent so when they greenlit the film, they weren't expecting a ton of dollars in the transactional market for it (thats the "no" part of the answer). SINNERS is also using the traditional long theatrical window which is the best way of maximizing the dollars and margin.

But I dont want that take away how essential these programs are for making movies by suggesting that SINNERS would have been easier to get made in say the year 2000. It would have taken a leap of faith then too to get it made.

DL: White House statement on the INTL Tariffs. California believes movies specifically are exempt from Presidential tariff powers. notfabio May 05, 09:31

It is the physical on location filming of films outside of the US they are trying to target. {nm} notfabio May 05, 09:33

thats what you and i talked about last night {nm} Moviesnob May 05, 09:45

Is he saying the 100% tariff will be on the gross? If not on the gross, then on what? {nm} CButera May 05, 10:32

They haven't thought that far ahead, but I imagine 100% tariff on the foreign tax incentive to wipe it out. nm Antibody May 05, 10:41

It will never happen. I imagine there will be so many lawsuits if they even try it. TheWeekendWarrior May 05, 11:24

I do think this will get held up in the courts for years and is basically Jon Voight meaning well and not knowing what he was talking about {nm} notfabio May 05, 11:35

I think its more likely Voight, who is really smart, asked for more tax incentives in the US especially in L.A. and Trump went his own way Moviesnob May 05, 11:40

It's worth pointing out that SINNERS, the darling film of 2025, would never exist if it wasnt for these tax programs both in the US & abroad {nm} Moviesnob May 05, 11:43

Isn't that more an indictment on the profitability of the film industry? {nm} JayPrimetown May 05, 11:49

Any evidence that Jon Voight is "really smart?" A product of nonsense-based education, trainwreck personal life, an obsolete clinger . . . SenJohnBlutarsky May 05, 14:33

They could cut down the budget. Does JURA6/7 really need to cost over $500M in production cost? Antibody May 05, 12:14

its kinda hard to make a movie about dinosaurs without a ton of fx, thats what people expect to see Moviesnob May 05, 14:27

Tariffs are paid by end-users... So at the theater, Americans will pay 100% more as tariff for a "foreign" movie... this is the only way... lukasck May 06, 06:11

Now, to define what is really a "foreign" movie is the problem... lukasck May 06, 06:12
