The Hobbit series of movies were/are all filmed back to back to back.
The first film opens next month and will make this starbond "star" material, which means he will be getting other offers to star in other projects.
Hobbit 2 opens a year from now. Hobbit 3 opens a year and a half from now. It is very possible for this actor to start filming other projects starting in spring 2013 (after Hobbit 3 is wrapped) and have them release before Hobbit 2 or before Hobbit 3 are released.
Filming in Spring 2013 could easily result in a Winter 2013 release. Filming in Summer 2013 could easily result in a Spring 2014 release (before Hobbit 3).
