FWIW, I sell long term holdings in order to buy a short term holding if it will make me more than 10% on my money in 3 days or less.
If it's a guaranteed money move that covers the cost of commission and then some, then it's worth the move even if you JUST lost 15k to commission 2 minutes ago buying a ton of some other stock. For example this past Saturday I sold off a ton of things to buy up IHOP shares before it halted since I saw the early estimates and knew it was going up big on Sunday.
