Character arcs
I agree with you re: Jesse and Hank
I think their series-long character arcs are to go from people whom you dislike (for different reasons) to rooting for and being the heroes of the show.
Jesse started out as the punk loser degenerate unreliable drug-dealer stereotype that everyone disdains and has no hope for. He's been disowned by his own family!
Hank is the loudmouth know-it-all that everyone humors because he's occasionally right. He may be a total a-hole, but he's an a-hole on the right side of the law at least.
They both have some major insecurity issues that they deal with in different ways: Hank by being loud, Jesse by getting high. Both of them have had life-altering events that happened to them that have caused them to re-evaluate themselves and come out the other side smarter and more mature.
Walt has been doing the same thing in reverse.
There is no way I would place any amount of money on any given character making it out of this season alive, other than Walt Jr! :)
