Plenty of people, including religious leaders, use their religious texts to push for the things they want personally.
Look at this guy, who thinks that the law should provide a process for parents to have rebellious children put to death, because the Bible set out such a process.

That doesn't mean Christians support child-killing. It just means he's an idiot. He's focussing on a single passage of the Bible at the expense of its broader messages, like love and compassion.
And I think similar statements from the Muslim world should be treated the same way. You only have to travel to a Muslim country, or talk with Muslims here to know that most of them are just normal people living their lives like you or I, who want the same things we do. They don't hate us.
