The timelines we're discussing are so unfathomably large (much like the national debt - ZING!), that we cannot comprehend them easily on their own terms. The number of our years involved become just words, rather than numbers indicating time, and are thus difficult for most people to understand correctly.
Once one begins to grasp the timelines involved, universal expansion (and even macroevolution) begins to make sense.
One problem that most all of us run into is that we tend to filter everything through our own (limited) experiences and time that we have spent alive. This is a huge mistake, as the usiverse is a much bigger (practically infinite) place than we can understand.
Once you start hanging arbitrary limits (such as the opinions in the religious texts of man) on that and then pile on your own personal interpretation of that, you veer away from objective reality.
