Go back and look at the MVPs of the last 35 years. Beyond the stats they all have one thing in common, double digit wins and playoff trips.
If Peterson wants a chance at MVP, he has to put his team on his back and win. Peyton and Brady do that. Take them away from a team and what happens? That's easy enough to see. The year Brady was out they didn't make the playoffs. Last year Peyton out, the Colts win 2 games out of 14. If that doesn't ooze the value of those players, then I don't know what does.
An MVP WINS games for teams, like LaDanian Tomlinson did in 06 and Shawn Alexander did a few years before him.
AP has had 750+ yards rushing and 4 TDs in their six losses. Wasted effort. Putting up numbers like that have to turn some of those games into victories to be considered the most valuable player. You're not as of much value if your team isn't going to the playoffs.
The only player that I could find winning MVP with single digit wins in the past 25 years was Barry Sanders, and he split the award with Farve. He also got his team to the playoffs.
Now, if AP can put the team on his back these next two games, win them both, get over 2000 yards and get his team to the playoffs...then there is a chance were talking MVP. If they go 8-8 and miss the playoffs then how valuable to the team was he? A RB w/ no postseason doesn't have more value to me than a QB that secures a first round bye with home field advantage, with a 4500 yard, 35 TD season and 100+ QB rating.
