I've read Ulysses

Posted by: JohnTEQP on Jan 15, 22:46 in response to RogerMore's post Ulysses is renowned for being impenetrable. Crime and...

I read it in an English seminar my senior year in college. The professor had us read every chapter twice just to have a clue what it was about. He explained some of the references, but even then I barely understood most of it. For example, there's a dog in one chapter. The dog changes breed over the course of the chapter - 12 times.

I loved it, so much that I traveled to Ireland and read the first chapter in the tower where it takes place (which is now a Joyce museum). One of my goals in life is to be in Dublin on Bloomsday, June 16, which is when it takes place (the main character's name is Leopold Bloom).

But it's so dense and thick with obscure references that it's impossible to understand it without being in a class taught by someone who can guide you. I'm sure there are Websites these days that provide lots of analysis and clues, but it would take a lot of patience and perseverance to read Ulysses. Then there's Finnegan's Wake, which is even worse . . . .

A question for second gary and other literature aficionados: accountant_4_Jesus Jan 15, 02:21

How about Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy {nm} blaze223 Jan 15, 06:50

Thanks for that suggestion, blaze. I'll try to get copies of them. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 15, 14:51

Ulysses is a classic, or Crime and Punishment. {nm} numbersix_99 Jan 15, 07:27

They sound like good books, I'll have to see if I can find some copies. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 15, 14:51

Really? Those are hard titles to get through. {nm} Antibody Jan 15, 15:17

What do you mean by hard titles to get through? Are they a slog to understand, or just big books? {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 15, 15:43

Ulysses is renowned for being impenetrable. Crime and Punishment is not as difficult but... not easy. {nm} RogerMore Jan 15, 16:11

I've read Ulysses JohnTEQP Jan 15, 22:46

Wow, that sounds like a really strange book then. Thanks for the heads-up. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 16, 14:01

They're not books people read for fun. Even Literature students dread them. {nm} Antibody Jan 15, 16:15

I think I'm getting an idea of them now... Maybe I might read a brief synopsis of them first and see if I feel up to tackling them. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 15, 18:13

You can download many of the classics for free from Project Gutenberg - they host books whose copyright has expired (over 75 yrs old) - link JDolphin Jan 15, 20:34

Thanks very much for that information and those links. :) {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 15, 21:11

I disagree: Crime is something I read as a teen and loved. Nothing difficult about it. Stop stereotyping it. {nm} numbersix_99 Jan 18, 11:43

What do you like to read? Adventure? Epic saga? Dramatic tragedy? Answer that question first, and then find a classic that fits. {nm} RogerMore Jan 15, 10:13

All of the above. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 15, 13:48

Adventure - Three Musketeers, or The Odyssey. Epic saga - maybe A Tale of Two Cities? Or Les Miserables. Dramatic tragedy - Anna Karenina RogerMore Jan 15, 14:10

Thanks for those suggestions, and the link. I'll check the link out, and see if I can get my hands on some copies of those books. accountant_4_Jesus Jan 15, 14:53

I'd be surprised if they weren't available at your local library. But I think your best bet is to find a book you think you'd be interested RogerMore Jan 15, 16:17

Well at present I'm still trying to figure out what kind of books like that I'd be interested in. accountant_4_Jesus Jan 15, 18:12

Pride & Prejudice {nm} charlie Jan 15, 19:48

Thanks for the suggestion. I've never read that one before, I'll have to check it out. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 16, 19:19

"Dune", "Dune Messiah", "Children of Dune", and if you're bored, "Chapter House". I consider them classics. {nm} elchan Jan 17, 22:10

How can I forget, "God Emperor of Dune". {nm} elchan Jan 17, 22:15
