I want to thank you all for your support. It has been a hard time and I have been losing it and even typing this is difficult

Posted by: mrbinns on Jul 24, 05:57 in response to Antibody's post mrbinns' wife of 43 years passed away this morning after...

In some ways, I have focused on the lousiness of the last 3 years, especially since she had her stroke in 2010.  I have said that in some ways she died at that time, and someone else was inhabiting her body.

But we are trying to celebrate her life.  As a great mom, as a fantastic teacher, and a loving companion.  She touched many lives.  At her funeral, there were people from so many phases of that life, from my friends from college, through her teaching days, even a co-worker at her last job when she was a school bus matron.

My daughter used 2 words that summed it up...."child whisperer" and I never thought of it that way, but she was so right.

Whether it was as a mom, a pre-school teacher or in a more formal classroom of early education, or een on the bus, she could reach children, get their loving attention and relate.  Even if we simply went to a restaurant, and there was a child in the next booth, a silent smile or a simple wave, and that child was wrapped up in Susan's spell.  If a child had ability, she enhanced their learning experience.  If the child had difficulty, she went out of her way to give that child special attention.  If a child had special needs and needed extra help, she was the first to point that out to parents, even those parents who might have been in denial for years.  Every child mattered.

She was a loving mother, did most of the heavy lifting of raising our 2 daughters, who have grown to be fantastic women.  Our grandson was her pride and joy and our granddaughter, born a few weeks after her stroke, was one of the great new memories that would not go away.  Her best times were spent doting on them, and a 400 mile distance made the time with them even more special for her.

Marriage is never easy.  There are always bumps in the road.  There is no Vice President to cast the tie-breaking vote, so you have to be able to compromise.  It is not a perfect situation.  You hope to enjoy your "Golden Ages" together and it is difficult to realize that we have not been doing so, and will not in the future.  It is a definite feeling of amputation of a missing limb....Of clothes that will not be worn.  Of toiletries that will not be used.   Of meals not shared...Of the empty side of the bed.  Springsteen sang it right..."everything is everything....but you're missing"

She will be missed by many people, but the expressions of love that I have received are incredible.  She will always be in my heart.

A photo from a cruise about 20 years ago.  I just wish I could get into my DeLorean, get hit by 1.21 gigajoules and go back.
