For too long the rule has been that if the fielder is in the neighborhood of the bag, the runner is out, or if the ball beat the runner, the runner is out.
It works that way for both teams and over 162 games, it evens out. I am sure that the Sox won a game or two this year with marginal calls.
However, eventually there will be a replay rule. (Note if there is one, any argument by a manager is an automatic challenge. If there are no challenges left, automatic ejection. )
