Every airplane has a Minimum Equipment List (MEL) and rules for what can be broken and what cannot, depending on weather and time of day/nt.
As established by the regulator (FAA / Transport Canada). Here's the Master MEL from FAA. Every system has a go/no go criteria. If it's a no go item, the airline's hands are tied. It may not make sense to the passengers, but the rules are not flexible if you want to keep your operators' license...also for safety. It certainly does err on the safe side, but wouldn't you rather get to your destination late than not at all? There are lots of things I can support complaining about when it comes to airline travel, but unserviceable MEL items are not one of them. I hope this helps ease the pain (and give you something to read while you wait for the next flight).
