Toronto's a city of 2.6 million (by city boundaries) Extrapolating that to a population the size of the US (3290 million) = 1100 deaths. I realise gun homicides are different to gun deaths, which include accidents and suicides, but even if we double the Toronto rate, it's still less than half the US rate.

The US has far, far higher levels of gun-related homicide and gun-related deaths than other comparable countries, as demonstrated in the vox article Roto posted (which includes Canada btw)
I'm yet to see anyone give a convincing explanation of why this is the case, other than the widespread availability of guns to people who are criminal or angry or insane and want to shoot other people. Other countries have just as many criminals and angry and insane people per capita, but the access those people have to guns is more restricted and the level of gun deaths is lower.
If you have a convincing explanation of why gun deaths in America are so much higher or why mass shootings are so much commoner than in other comparable countries, I'm happy to read it. There are other factors that affect gun violence where things can be improved (the number of homicide cases that are solved, for example), but I don't think they are as material to the high gun death rate as easy access to guns (or particular types of guns).
I don't know why you would think to compare America to a country like Honduras, which has poorly-resourced police, relatively weak government institutions, widespread poverty, powerful gangs operating criminal enterprises with impunity, the corruption and turf wars that come with being a major transit point for illegal drugs, etc.
