You're correct in that sense. The workaround "hack" was a brute force attack by cloning the phone and testing PIN combinations
on virtual copies of the drive until they got the PIN.
They most likely set up a system where they cloned the phone's drive (as many times as necessary), ran software PIN entry on it 10x until it locked up or opened, then moved on to the next virtual copy. Rinse, repeat until it opens the virtual copy, then do it on the real phone.
It all probalby went very very fast (relatively speaking) once the software infrastructure to run the scripts was set up (likely it was already in place in Israel as they have probably done this before).
Apple's (and any other telephone OS) security is only as solid as the PIN number used. Anyone who can make a backup copy of your phone's drive could do the same thing with the PIN. I think this is the main reason tech companies are going biometric (fingerprint scanner, or other unique identifier method).
How long before we have 2 or 3 stage security on our phones just to open and use them?
