1961 the Vikings played Cowboys twice, everyone else once ; AFL was double round robin 14 games in 1960...
If you love football, the more the better. If a team is out of it, 2 extra games keep them in play longer.
As to adding to the playoffs, it may have to be a done deal to get ESPN some games. First weekend could be 3 Sat, 3 Sun and 2 Mon with ESPN getting games. I do not see the need, just the greed.
As to the 18 game schedule we know that the NFL wants more neutral site international games. More home games for the Toronto Bisons for sure. Games in Tokyo, London, Mexico...did someone say LA ????
I personally hope that the 2 extra games are inter-conference, with a balance (a #1 and a #4 or a #2 and a #3)
How about this??? One of the extra games could be devoted to "Traditional Rivalries" if teams opt for it, for the 3 years that they are not played. So Jets-Giants scheduled for 2011 and 2015 would also get '12, '13 and '14. Did someone say Ravens-Skins? Rams-Chiefs; Fins-Bucs; Jags-Saints; Cards-Chargers; 49ers-Raidas; Hawks-Broncs for old times sakes; Pokes-Texans (but the Pokes would turn it down) etc. If the Vikes say we choose not to participate, no problem. But most of these would promote visiting team fans buying tickets which would be a good thing.
Players wearing down? Make the 53 man roster 56 or 57. or make it possible to activate some of the IRed people late in the season if they are ready to come back. More subs keep others fresher.
Do not cry about the 'Hawks. They earned the berth fair and square. Do they want to eliminate first round home games for the 4th seed? Jets OE
