I have the three at a time plan and send one back every day (minus Sunday) so I get a new movie every day. When I do this I tend to not get the new releases for a couple of weeks after they are out. When I go on vacation or just don't watch movies for awhile (1-3 weeks of holding my current movies) I find that I can send a movie back any time and I'll always get the top three, even if they say very long wait. Netflix throttles heavy users.
I stopped worrying about release dates since if I'm waiting for the rental anyway, who cares when I get it. And if I really want it when it comes out then I'll just hold my movies for two weeks before and ship two in on Saturday before release and one on Monday for good measure. Only failed me once.

From my experience they ship new releases on Monday so you get them Tuesday. Jan 12, 12:52
