Why do I have negative cash when the system let me just make a 9 mil + stock purchase?

I had $9 mil and then some in cash.  I bought the maximum (40,000 and some shares) of a rather pricey stock.  Wouldn't the system have just reduced my "buy max" but a few shares instead of leaving me with negative cash?  Or barring that, wouldn't the trade have failed?
