Iranian writer-director Majid Majidi won a second Grand Prix of the Americas at the Montreal World Film Festival with this story of an 8-year-old blind boy who returns with his father, a poor coal worker, to their native village in northern Iran. The distant father is seeking a new bride while the child is left to his own devices, and the boy discovers the nurturing powers of mother nature in the process. Young actor Mohsen Ramezani beautifully captures the inherent goodness and courage of the blind boy whose deep spiritual value to the father is only realized after a tragedy.
