Anthony Hopkins plays a psychiatrist who travels into the African jungle to study apes. He becomes lost and finds himself isolated from civilization for over two years, during which time, he becomes assimilated into the ape "culture" he originally intended to study. No longer able to speak and living by the rules of the jungle, the good doctor proceeds to kill three people and injures several others, when he is finally re-located by the civilization he left behind.
Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s character is a psychologist who attempts to bring the doctor back into touch with the modern world, so that he can stand trial for his crimes.
The film is loosely based on the novel "Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn.
