Considered one of the greatest actors of our time, Marlon Brando brought method acting to new levels of genius and has been the influence to many of today's young actors.
Brando first caused a stir with a role in Elia Kazan's A Streetcar Named Desire which made him a celebrity practically overnight. His performance as Stanley Kowalski created a new standard of acting and won Brando the Oscar for Best Actor in 1951.
Brando followed Streetcar with a series of unforgettable performances including Emiliano Zapata in Viva Zapata, Johnny in The Wild One, Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls, and Fletcher Christian in Mutiny on the Bounty.
Although Brando acquired a reputation as a perfectionist and a genius at his craft, he also had a knack for creating controversy. In 1972, Brando won Oscar for his role as Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather. He shocked the Academy by refusing the award and sent a spokeswoman for Native American rights in his place. That year, Brando also appeared in the highly controversial Last Tango in Paris, which was considered by many to be his greatest performance. In 1979, Brando found himself in the center of attention again when he was cast as Colonel Walter E. Kurtz in Apocalpse Now. Brando showed up for the shoot late, drunk, 80 pounds overweight, and unprepared. Unfortunately, the incidents surrounding the shoot for Apocalpse Now would foreshadow his behavior in later years.
In 1990, Brando was able to rediscover his softer side when he spoofed his Godfather role in the movie The Freshman. Although his recent film Don Juan DeMarco and The Island of Dr. Moreau did less than stellar at the box office, Brando is still considered the one of the greatest actors to ever grace the silver screen and has influenced most of today's greatest actors.
