Chocolat is a sweet celluloid concoction from director Lasse Hallstrom, who was nominated last year for The Cider House Rules. The Swedish director first gained notice in 1987 when he was nominated for directing My Life As a Dog.
Based on the novel by Joanne Harris, Chocolat centers on a mysterious woman played by Juliette Binoche who moves into a small town and opens a chocolate shop. In no time, social order is turned upside-down by her confections in a variety of funny and romantic interludes. Trouble arises when the mayor, who views chocolate as a sin, feels threatened by the success of the chocolate shop. Strong supporting roles have been turned in by Judi Dench, Lena Olin, Alfred Molina, and Johnny Depp. Chocolat is produced by Miramax which also backed Hallstrom's Oscar nominated The Cider House Rules last year.
