Suriyothai is the biggest film ever made in Thailand. The epic film spans 57 years of Thai history from the reign of King Ramathibodhi II (1491-1529) and ends with the great battle of King Tabinshwehti in 1548. The film portrays the political infighting amongst the different royal dynasties through the story of legendary queen Phra Suriyothai, the major consort of Somdet Phra Maha Chakraphat, King of Ayothaya. Production on the historical epic took two years with a principle cast of 70 and the highest budget in Thai filmmaking of $9 million. Suriyothai is directed by Prince Chatrichalerm Yukol, a member of the Thai royal family.
