The feature film adaptation of the computer game Warcraft gained instant credibility with one signature, Sam Raimi [SRAIM]. World of Warcraft is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) set in a Middle Earth-like fantasy world replete with orcs, elves and monsters. Thousands of players inhabit the realm and interact with each other at the same time. The Blizzard Entertainment game has long been in development at Legendary Films as a fantasy film in the vein of Lord of the Rings.
Movies based on videogames has had a mixed track record. While some succeed like the Resident Evil series, most failed to meet expectations like the recent Street Fighter. Not helping matters is director Uwe Boll, who singlehandedly brought down the genre with his string of cheap game adaptations. Can Raimi do for videogames what he did for comic superheroes with Spider-Man? The director will tackle the Warcraft after he finishes Spider-Man 4.
