Not even The Hobbit was immuned to holiday shopping and other festivities as An Unexpected Journey [HOBIT] tumbled an unexpectedly 57% to $36.7 million in its second weekend. That was still enough to lead the box office against the five new arrivals. Part one of the fantasy adventure has totaled $149.9 million.
Jack Reacher [1SHOT] opened in second place with an estimated $15.6 million. The Tom Cruise action vehicle will need good word of mouth to expand its audience outside older guys.
Judd Apatow's comedy This is 40 [TIS40] grossed $12.0 million to debut at the third spot. The sort-of sequel to Knocked Up attracted a crowd that was 57% female, and 50% over the age of 30.
The Seth Rogen-Barbra Streisand comedy The Guilt Trip [GTRIP] gathered $5.4 million over the weekend and $7.4 million since opening on Wednesday.
The re-release of Monsters, Inc. 3D [MON3D] scored just $5.0 million over the weekend, while Cirque du Soleil: World's Away [CDS3D] fared even worse with $2.1 million.
