2013 is off to a horrific start as the horror reboot Texas Chainsaw 3D [TXCM3] claimed the top spot with an estimated $23.0 million at the weekend box office. The slasher film attracted an audience that was 64% under the age of 25, many of whom were fans of star Trey Songz.
Django Uncained [DJANG] remained in second place at $20.1 million, off just 33% from its opening weekend. The slavery-era western has banked $106.4 million.
After ruling for 3 weekends, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey [HOBIT] finished third with $17.5 million. The first part of the trilogy has accumulated $263.8 million.
Les Miserables [LESMS] earned $16.1 million for fourth place. The musical declined 42% in its second weekend to bring its total to $103.6 million.
Parental Guidance [PGUID] rounded out the top five with $10.1 million. The family film held 74%of its opening weekend.
In its first weekend of wide release, the fracking drama Promsied Land [PRMSD] drew a disappointing $4.3 million.
