Whisper Numbers: The Green Hornet faces The Dilemma

The long Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend brings two new buddy movies to the multiplex. After a long torturous development and production process, The Green Hornet [GHRNT] finally arrives with Seth Rogen [SROGE] as the titled crime fighter and Jay Chou [JCHOU] as his partner Kato, who does most of the actual fighting. The PG-13 rated action comedy has overcome its initial bad buzz and has been tracking favorably with its target audience of males, young and old. Opening in 3584 theaters that includes 3D and IMAX, The Green Hornet could punch out $36 million over the 4-day holiday weekend.

Vince Vaughn [VVAUG] and Kevin James [KJAME] buddy up for The Dilemma [DILEM] directed inexplicitly by Ron Howard [RHOWA]. The PG-13 rated comedy tries to make light of the situation where a man finds out about his best friend’s cheating wife, but just hasn’t come off as funny in the marketing. Couples could still give the lowbrow fare a chance despite poor reviews. Landing in 2941 theaters, The Dilemma may deliver $25 million over the long weekend.

True Grit [TGRIT] looks to remain the top choice for older, discriminating moviegoers. The western remake could rope in $11 million over the MLK Jr. holiday weekend.

Black Swan increases its theater counts by nearly 50% in its latest expansion. The psychological thriller should maintain its spot in the top five with another $10 million over the long weekend, which should be close to how much Little Fockers [MPRN3] gross for its fourth frame.

The word of mouth is poor for the sophomore pic Season of the Witch [SEWTC]. The male-targeted actioner is poised to drop to about $6 million over the 4-day period.

That’s the whisper from the trading floor.
