When you buy a stock, you are betting that it will go up. When you decide you don't want it anymore, you sell (click for more)
When you think a stock will go down, you short it. When you decide you don't want it anymore, you cover (that's "selling" a shorted stock). You make $1 per share for every dollar the stock goes up when you buy (long) the stock. You make 1$ per share for every dollar the stock goes DOWN when you short the stock.
