Question about IPOs

Can someone explain to me exactly how IPOs work when it comes to price movement? I've observed that after the initial number of shares are sold, sometimes the price moves very, very slowly no matter how many shares are being sold, and at other times it moves quickly. It kind of seems to be at random to me, but I'm sure it's not. I'd like to better understand that, so any information anyone can provide would be appreciated. Thanks!
