Buy<--->Sell ....=....Short<-->Cover

When you "buy" something (or go "long") you are investing expecting the price to go up. To get rid of a "buy" or "long" you sell it.

 

When you "short" something, you are investing expecting the price to go down.  To get rid of a "short" you "cover" it.

If you have 500 shares short, you need to "cover" to get rid of them lapuckfan Dec 16, 18:11
