the answer is very complex. its not just about the opening per theater average. it depends on the distributor, the award buzz, and much more
Example a distributor like Drafthouse Films will only book films into a handful of theaters, even though they have had PTAs as high as $27,000.Because their films are for specific audiences, and they do more on vod/streaming.
Unlike A24 which is more willing to expand even if the PTA is low, as long as they feel buzz is strong. Their film The Spectacular Now went from 415 theaters (limited) to 770 theaters (wide) even though the PTA in those 415 theaters was only $1644
there is no magic formula and no simple answers dude
