What is striking is that a relatively few traders -- more than one trading 200,000 shares, in multiple portfolios, it appears -- appear to be able to send individual stocks up two or three percent in a few minutes. After the first several trades precipitate relatively large gains, the "piling on" trades seem to generate more gradual increases.
Substantial gains are to be made by reading and following the changing tide at reset (3 a.m. Eastern). Some of the movers can be predicted (stocks that made substantial gains during the just-ended trading day, recent issues) while others (generally a few lower-priced stocks) seem random, except to the extent 600,000 shares or so of a thinly traded stock are purchased in the first five minutes of the trading day.
