People connecting to a character is what makes stories so good.
Great stories make you feel like you know them. When you read a book or watch a movie, you know its not real but that doesn't mean you can't be connected emotionally. A lot of times they DO represent real things. The article was very well written and offered her opinion on the movie and the character. Not sure how that makes her an idiot.
