So Who Saw What Last Week? (me - Bunraku: C-)
IIRC, Snob called this the worst movie of the year. Still, I was hoping to like it. And while it had a moment or two, the more I think about it, the less I like it. Its a revenge tale, with western and samurai elements, using highly stylized visuals (think Speed Racer meets Sin City, but not as good.) The film has 2 fatal flaws.
First one is that this movie exists in its own universe. Which can be fun, as long as it is well explained to the audience. This film doesnt. The opening is hard to follow as we are given exposition via voiceover but little context to grasp it. The film isnt complex, just confusing initially. Its like that Star Trek episode Darmok, where Picard and alien Paul Winfield cant communicate because while Picards translator makes the words into English, Winfield speaks in metaphors, which Picard doesnt know the story behind. Thats what this film is like.
Second is that there is no emotional depth to things. The drifters (Josh Hartnett) actions and backstory arent gone into much, which doesnt allow for a rooting interest in the goings-on. Its just empty fight scenes one after another. Gratuitous violence needs to have a reason behind it. (Yes, that makes sense) So despite all the visuals and action, its all pretty boring.
Now the final confrontations I thought were actually pretty good. They werent overdone, some cool moments, and Ron Perlman delivered his final lines pretty well with gravitas and emotion. Really though, I wouldnt recommend this for the most part. 99% of you will agree with Snob, the other 1%, like me, will find this merely fairly mediocre. (I cant imagine anyone loving this film)
