I have two theories...
Theory #1 - Poor marketing... the TV spots were a mess and really gave no idea what the storyline was about or why somebody should go see the movie. After seeing multiple TV ads, all I knew about the movie was that (in this order)... it was Scorsese, it was 3D, it was a kids movie
Theory #2 - Scorsese, Kids Movie, 3D
I image some some father dude saying to some mother:
"Hey you remember that Scorsese director who makes all those gruesome rated R gangster movies... well he has just made a kids movie, lets load up the kids, pay $15 a pop (cause its 3D) and check it out!"
