Something to consider (and I don't know if it's true), is that the studios might be playing the "long game" here, thinking
that 3D technology is here to stay. Disney has, in the past, liked to re-release movies in theaters every couple years. They might get the urge to do so with these 3D versions. Also, they might expect that 3D tvs and dvd/bluray players at home will become the "norm" and are getting a jump on that, having their popular animated movies ready to roll out for the home market in 3D.
