The Best Films of 2012, As Graded By You:

Posted by: islander (a.k.a del_USA_islander) on Jan 07, 17:24

As you may know, we have a weekly movie poll in which we share what films we saw and what we thought of them. I kept track of the grades given to films that received a 2012 North American theatrical or direct-to-video release, and ranked them, converting the letter grades you gave into points (A+=11, A=10, A-=9 etc... to D=1, D-=0, and F=-1). *Festival films and others with no discernable release were not included; I saved those grades should they be released in 2013.

252 films received at least one grade. For this recap, I ranked films that received 4 or more grades. There were 80 such films. Here is how they rank, with their average score.

THE BEST OF 2012:

1. holy motors            10.00
2. argo                   9.33
3. lincoln                9.08
4. secret world of arrietty, the    9.00
5. amour                9.00
6. jiro dreams of sushi        8.80

8. django unchained        8.60
9. looper                8.44
10. goon                8.22

Best with 2-3 votes:

samsara                10.50
elena                10.50
queen of versailles, the    10.50
wreck it ralph            9.33
zero dark thirty        9.33
undefeated            9.33
perks of being a wallflower    9.00
footnote            9.00
kill list            9.00
ruby sparks            9.00

22 films received a total of 27 A+'s:

lincoln (3),  argo (2),  holy motors (2),  marvel's the avengers (2),  beasts of the southern wild,  django unchained,  elena,  the fairy, the flowers of war,  the grey,  the intouchables,  led zeppelin celebration day,  lol, the master,  the perks of being a wallflower,  prometheus,  the queen of versailles,  the raid redemption,  samsara,  the secret world of arrietty, skyfall,  the turin horse

63rd The Hobbit

Films we saw the most: # of grades given

marvels the avengers    26
dark knight rises, the    25
hunger games, the    20
looper            18
chronicle        18
brave            18
prometheus        17
cabin in the woods, the    16
skyfall            16

2010 206 films receieved grades. 569 votes in total were given for an average grade of 6.622
2011 229 films receieved grades. 913 votes in total were given for an average grade of 6.372
2012 252 films receieved grades. 917 votes in total were given for an average grade of 6.741

so a 4% drop in quality for 2011 compared to 2010, and there was a 4% drop in box office. then a 6% increase in quality for 2012 compared to 2011, and there was a 6.5% increase in box office. Yes, this is a very small sample, but to see quality vs revenue matchup is intriguing.

interesting also is that despite us being movie geeks, that we *only* saw 252 films. BOM tracked 655 theatrical releases alone. Lots of movies we haven't seen yet. Highest grossing film we didnt see: Think Like A Man with $91M. Meeting Evil was the lowest grosser to receive a vote ($525.00, B+)

My personal top 10: (though I havent seen a lot yet)

Goon                A
Moonrise Kingdom        A-
Chronicle            A-
Battleship            A-
The Odd Life/Timothy Green    A-
Project X            B+
Cloud Atlas            B+
Resident Evil: Retribution    B+
Lincoln                B+
21 Jump Street            B+

We watch lots of films that are not from the current year. I'm currently over a year behind in my movie watching, with the exception of slappydavid Jan 07, 17:29

I watched 287 movies in 2012, with around a dozen of them being released in 2012... {nm} slappydavid Jan 07, 17:36

yeah for klown! {nm} Moviesnob Jan 07, 17:41

bullhead was 19th. {nm} islander Jan 07, 17:42

whoohoo! Shameless promotion, but Miami Connection came out on DVD in December, its probably our most popular film. Moviesnob Jan 07, 17:47

heres the trailer (cut by the director of HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN) Moviesnob Jan 07, 17:49

I'm sure Miami Connection will eventually replace The Room for the movie I've seen the most with a crowd. #stupidcocaine {nm} skamanfu Jan 07, 17:58

I've never seen anything like the Everything Is Fest screening of Miami Connection Moviesnob Jan 07, 18:05

Not sure of my total film count, but I saw 138 films that were released this year along with a handful that will be release in 2013 at FFs. {nm} skamanfu Jan 07, 17:41

And awesome to see what made it as #1. And since I promised MovieSnob, here's my top 12 for the year skamanfu Jan 07, 17:43

great list, although i really hated SLP personally. I dont know if I'll ever see Pitch Perfrect {nm} Moviesnob Jan 07, 17:50

Have close family members with mental illness so it hit home. Hated the ads for Pitch Perfect, but one of the m ore enjoyable experiences. {nm} skamanfu Jan 07, 17:55

Can't really disagree with anything there. Some may be overrated but not bad. {nm} thatpj Jan 07, 18:14

thx!...congrats to Holy Motors {nm} tealfan Jan 07, 19:32

Not sure I grasp the system. Why isn't Skyfall in that top 10. It had 27 A+. JMT-NL Jan 08, 00:01

hmmm, not sure how you came up with that. i'll try to clarify inside islander Jan 08, 06:55

tnks... Guess I read your IM wrong. Where you said '22 films got 27 A+'s' and after that the list with Skyfall among them. sorry JMT-NL Jan 09, 00:54
