... you are reacting to the (verbal) obscenities and abundant stylized violence to such an extent that the many virtues of the film are left unseen. Tarantino doesn't need my cheerleading, but there is a tremendous wit and talent and bravery at work in his films, a love for film history, and a robust, boyish play. He is not everyone's cup of tea.

In a "Fresh Air" interview on NPR which circulated a lot about a month ago, Tarantino was quite clear about his approach to "movie violence" and the more realistic, "modest" depiction of violence against the slaves in the film, and if for no other reason this renewal of a conversation about film violence and slavery is welcome. Give the interview a try, and see if it influences how you think about the movie:
