Movies

I think that's the sensitivity. It's why female villains in movies are often killed by another female character (spoils for various films)

Posted by: RogerMore on Oct 12, 16:46 in response to tawdryhepburn's post Does it though? It's James Bond, so there is little...

Rosamund Pike in Die Another Day, Lea Seydoux in Mission Impossible 4, etc. Or they're killed off by the villain - like in You Only Live Twice, or they kill themselves (Grace Jones in View to a Kill, Maria Grazia Cucinotta in the opening sequence of The World Is Not Enough, etc

its a well known trope - Superman never hits Ursa in Superman 2, in Scott Pilgrim Scott won't hit a girl but Brandon Routh's character is shown to be an **** because he does, etc.

And it always depends on how it's handled. Like the fight between Bruce Willis and Maggie Q in Die Hard 4 is clearly "justified" in hero vs villain terms - he's John McClane and she's a terrorist - but that scene and the one after it still manages to be kinda sexist and racist

Wmag: JCHAS " One of my goals is to play a villain in a Bond film... I’m waiting for that call!" Call her! Antibody Oct 12, 10:13

she would be almost as intimidating as Adam Driver {nm} jangles Oct 12, 10:21

More so than MAMAL. Enough with the eurotrash villains. {nm} Antibody Oct 12, 10:29

Idris Elba {nm} jangles Oct 12, 10:30

He should be up for 007. {nm} Antibody Oct 12, 10:32

You think it would be sensible to have him start a series of films as Bond, in 4/5 years time, at pushing 50? [nm] ladybegood Oct 12, 11:07

I thought Craig is going to do one more. In that case, longer than 4-5 years. More like 8+ years in which case he'll be over 50. ~JPV~ Oct 12, 11:26

I think Roger More was 58 when he did his last Bond film.. {nm} Dorfman Oct 12, 13:14

And he probably should've bowed out a couple films earlier IMO. {nm} ~JPV~ Oct 12, 13:32

But I didn't look a day older than 55! {nm} RogerMore Oct 12, 13:34

Watch it, buddy... {nm} EuroFund Oct 12, 10:37

It amazes me that the producers keep going for the male 'blofeld-type' villain... where numerous actresses would be more interesting JMT-NL Oct 12, 11:42

In a physical action movie sense, you are limited on how you can have Bond confront a female villian and still be considered "heroic" {nm} notfabio Oct 12, 12:04

The idea that a woman cannot be in a fight has an underlying level of misogyny. tawdryhepburn Oct 12, 12:24

The MPAA treats violence against women differently than against men among other things {nm} notfabio Oct 12, 12:36

I agree, but the idea of watching a man beat up a woman for our entertainment also has an underlying element of misogyny. RogerMore Oct 12, 14:07

Does it though? It's James Bond, so there is little chance of a female adversary who isn't overtly sexualized. But a fight can be a fight. {nm} tawdryhepburn Oct 12, 15:55

Kingsman and Dredd are two films that come to mind with female villains that get into fights with the hero {nm} RamsFan2004 Oct 12, 13:38

But were also R-rated. {nm} notfabio Oct 12, 13:45

True. {nm} RamsFan2004 Oct 12, 14:01

X-Men: Mystique vs Wolverine X-Men 2: Lady Deathstrike vs Wolverine RazorHawk Oct 12, 16:28

I was gonna say Xenia Onatopp, but Bond never actually struck her. {nm} Antibody Oct 12, 13:52

Actually he did - spoils RogerMore Oct 12, 14:11

Ha, it was off-screen. Antibody Oct 12, 14:29

can't he just shoot her ( no slapping ) and apologize ? {nm} JMT-NL Oct 12, 13:55

He did in The World is Not Enough. {nm} Antibody Oct 12, 13:57

hmm...I think that was the only time there was a female Bond villain {nm} tealfan Oct 12, 15:45
