"But taking offense at an actor’s decisions, no matter their motivation, ultimately says more about the fragility of our own tastes"

"Maybe “I like Robert De Niro” doesn’t communicate the same volcanic masculinity as it did in 1980. But “I hate what Robert De Niro has done to his legacy” suggests the sort of intransigence that accompanies the worst, and least becoming, sort of taste.

To like Robert De Niro in 2016 is to give no ****s about what other people think of you and your taste. Which is exactly, gloriously, what De Niro has decided for himself."

Thanks for sharing this. well thought out piece that challenged some of my thinking.

It's been a long, slow fall for Robert DeNiro. But here it finally is, co-starring in a "comedy" with Zac Effron. He's hit bottom. goodvibe61 Jan 20, 16:03

No I think Adam Sandler would be rock bottom. {nm} hyper_2016YTD Jan 20, 16:08

Jack Nicholson did give an excellent performance in an Adam Sandler movie {nm} Peterlee (from past) Jan 20, 16:27

So did Al Pacino :) FabioParme Jan 20, 16:43

Adam Sandler is Orson {nm} goodvibe61 Jan 20, 22:05

Adam Sandler is orson welles compared to Zac Efron. {nm} goodvibe61 Jan 20, 22:07

BF: The shaming of Robert De Nirro. He's working with MSCOR on IRISH, but Marty keeps putting it off for years. He wants to work. Antibody Jan 20, 16:52

He's had a lot of legal issues like a 6.4 million tax lien most recently, but he earned 20 million from Little Fockers alone. notfabio Jan 20, 17:11

Meet The Parents was no less mainstream/raunchy {nm} slipping jimmy Jan 20, 17:09

Meet the Parents was actually funny, and Ben Stiller is Groucho Marx compared to Zac Efron. {nm} goodvibe61 Jan 20, 22:11

I thought he hit bottom when he starred in a comedy with Billy Crystal...then bounced back up...then down again...bouncy bouncy {nm} tealfan Jan 20, 17:10

Yep, and no one here is talking about de Niro in KILLER ELITE or KILLING SEASON. Matter of fact, did KILLING SEASON even go to theaters? {nm} eallensbp Jan 20, 23:14

DRTGP is a step up for de Niro compared to many paycheck films the man has done. {nm} eallensbp Jan 20, 23:15
