No, the worst thing we have in today's movie culture is Brett Ratner. And Michael Bay. And Zach Snyder.
And I think a lot of moviegoers, contrary to what Ratner claims, do understand what goes into a movie like Batman v Superman. The time, the resources, the astronomical budget, the hard long hours of many people, the decades of fan excitement... that's why people get so upset when all of those things are employed in the service of a ****ty, paper thin script and made into a really crappy, underwhelming movie. Not that we shouldn't make movies on that kind of scale. But when studios spend those kinds of resources and finances, they should be doing it in service of a project that isn't guaranteed to fail from the outset. You can't predict what films will hit and what films don't, but you can certainly hedge your bets by not greenlighting a multi-hundred-million-dollar project that has the narrative complexity that could easily fit onto a ****tail napkin. There's no reason why the intended big blockbusters can't also be smart, well-written, thoughtful, and more narratively challenging while still being exhilarting, big, and fun.
