I love the game and I don't do any of the things you just listed in your last comment.
Just because you are not doing as well as you would like, don't assume that everyone else is setting their portfolios up to be automated or not using good old fashioned intuition to know what stocks to buy. Yes, moving upwards get very tough as you get into the higher percentiles, but it is doable.
