Rachel Z. will (should) get there eventually but she's not Natalie Wood-level in 1961 (but also, Rita Moreno and Chita Rivera were probably the only other two Latina stars who could have played Maria authentically at the time). Ariana/Anita and David/Bernardo are great, as advertised.
especially on the Jets side of casting, they're all generic to the point of blending together without much distinction; the various dudes in the 1961 could be annoying to the point of caricature but at least they each had a separate look and voice. as good as the new Riff is he's no Russ Tamblyn and Ansel Elgort, charitably, is no Richard Beymer.
the miracle is despite zero chemistry between Tony and Maria, the ending still works!
